A Single Man is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. Set in Los Angeles in 1962 at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it tells the story of British college professor George Falconer (Colin Firth) who struggles to find meaning in his life after the death of his longtime partner. Throughout the single day depicted in the film, George dwells on his past and his empty future as he plans to commit suicide that evening.
A romantic tale of love-interrupted and isolation, the film ultimately reveals the importance of the seemingly insignificant moments in life. Colin Firth received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 2009 Venice Film Festival. Academy Award nomination for Best Actor (Colin Firth). Mar. 15–20, 22–23 screening room. 100 mins.
